SELF-FEEDER MANAGEMENT
- Feeder troughs need to be kept clean
- Feed and water must be avaiable at all times
- Never let the feeder go empty
- Set slides on feeder so cattle have to work for the feed
- Prescribe feed hay, we highly recommend NO free choice hay
- Feeding free choice hay is not recommended because when both grain and roughage are available free choice, some cattle may eat only hay, others only grain or may periodically switch back and forth. When cattle switch from an all hay ration to high grain ration too quickly, digestive upsets can occur including acidosis, bloat or sudden death.
